Burl Jones

Burl Jones uses sculpture as a way of expressing his love for those interests that have dominated his life.  Wildlife, mountain men, Native Americans, fishermen and hunters all come to have a life of their own under his skilled hands.

Jones was born and raised near Charleston, WV.  He received a football scholarship to West Virginia University, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the school of Dentistry in 1966.  A two year stint in the United States Public Health Service brought Jones to the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana.  This exposure to Native American Culture, western wildlife and frontier ethic would prove to be a major influence on his later work.

It was in 1978 when sculpting became a life force for Jones.  The catalyst was a small ram built from dental wax, cast at home with makeshift tools and materials.  This ram was the first of over one hundred original sculptures created by Jones.  After nearly twenty-five years of dentistry, Burl shifted gears to focus entirely on his sculpture.

Jones has won numerous awards for his work all around the country.  He has also been chosen to do many commissions which include one for Notre Dame University.  Today, Jones and his wife Eunice live on a ranch in Montana where he continues to create beautiful sculptures.
