Dave McGary |
 Dave
McGary, born in 1958, grew up in Cody, Wyoming, the son of a ranching
family. As a teenager, he
was awarded a grant to study anatomy and the bronze-making process
with master craftsmen in Italy. He
worked in a foundry by day and on his own sculpture at night.
After returning to the United States in 1978, Dave spent the
next three years working at a bronze foundry, developing his own style
and techniques. In 1981,
Dave opened his own foundry and finishing facility in New Mexico.
Today, Dave McGary oversees every step of his creative process. The connection to Native American culture through his friendship with Daniel Long Soldier is one way that McGarys art stands apart from other contemporary interpretations of Native American culture, Though he immerses himself in history books and other means of study, it is his living connection to Native American culture that breathes life into each piece. Today, Dave McGary is internationally known and recognized for his works in bronze. His sculptures are in permanent collections of the U.S. Capitol National Statuary Hall, the Smithsonian Museum and the White House collection in Washington, D.C. Other monuments are placed at the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum in Cody, Wyoming, and the Governors Mansion in Cheyenne, Wyoming. |
