Gregg Russell

Gregg Russell has been tied to the Western landscape for as long as he can remember.  He was raised in Weiser, Idaho, a small farming community on the Idaho/Oregon boarder.  Gregg attended Boise State University where he took several courses in art.  "I wanted to paint the landscape that I grew up around.  I wanted to paint the rivers that I fished and the mountains that I hiked" says Gregg.  After graduation, he returned to art and was influenced by the work of Robert Moore.  He quickly signed up for a workshop and began his 'serious art studies'.  Gregg would also study with Gregory Packard and with Tom Browning, where he studied under full scholarship at the Scottsdale Artists' School.

Gregg prefers to work "en plein air" and does field studies on location.  These field studies later become valuable reference material for his studio pieces.  He paints primarily in the western states of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.  However, he has traveled to paint on location in Arizona, Utah, California and Oregon.  His work is impressionistic in nature yet his main focus is to simply share the beauty of nature with his viewer.  "I simply want my viewer to see the peace and tranquility of creation', says Gregg.

While still in his early thirties Gregg's career is just beginning, yet he has already received many honors.  He has participated in several national juried shows including the American Impressionist Society's National Juried Show,  Scottsdale Artist Schools' Best and Brightest, and the CM Russell Art Auction.  He is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society and was selected as the 2007 Idaho Paints Idaho Grand Prize Winner for his painting Weiser River Winter sponsored by The Easter Idaho Art Museum.  His work hangs in various private and corporate collections including the permanent collection at the Eastern Idaho Art Museum, The City of Meridian, The City of Boise, Jean-Pierre Boespflug & Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter.
