Scott
Scherer was born and raised in Nebraska. Since he was a young boy
Scott has had a passion for the western outdoors and its wildlife.
In September of 2002, Scott began to try
his hand at sculpting clay and by the following summer he had his
first piece cast in a foundry. His works are impressionistic, a style
which he has always been drawn to. According to Scott, "I try to
convey realistic action and proportion while at the same time trying
not to get too weighed down by detail. I believe that sculptures
should look good from every angle and so I look for different
movements animals make and try to capture this with my camera or
sketch pad before I sculpt it in clay." With his sculpture, Scott
wants to remind people of the wildlife they have seen by providing a
work of art that will preserve their memories for years to come.
While Scott is mostly self-taught he
does have an immense admiration for other wildlife sculptors. Perhaps
Scott’s greatest artistic influence is from Gerald Balciar. Scott
attended a workshop taught by Gerald Balciar at the Scottsdale Artist
School in Arizona in March of 2004. In February 2005 Scott’s "High
Above It All" placed third in the FNAWS (Foundation of North American
Wild Sheep) Artist of the Year competition in San Antonio, Texas.
Scott travels frequently throughout
Wyoming and Colorado for inspiration. A few of his favorite places to
study wildlife research are Custer State Park, Yellowstone National
Park, and Grand Teton National Park. Scott currently lives in the
Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and two children.
